I was completely elated when they cut him loose in time for Christmas at home! Having been through this same recovery with him 10 times before, I knew what we were in for, and compared to taking care of an end-stage Alzheimer's patient with bouts of uncontrollable rage, I was sure I could handle it.
By Christmas Eve I had to call our family to tell her we probably wouldn't make it to Christmas. Dad's pain had started going the wrong way and even with the strictest pain medication schedule, and throwing everything he had at it, we couldn't get ahead of it. After 2 nights without sleep because he was in so much pain, I loaded him in the car and headed for the hospital in Grand Rapids.
After what seemed like forever, we finally got out of the ER. Apparently Internal Medicine and Surgery were fighting over who had to admit him, which led to about 12 extra hours of extreme discomfort in the ER.
Finally once they did admit him, they diagnosed an infected hematoma and sent him back into surgery to clean it out.
